Define: fatberg
“a very large mass of solid waste in a sewerage system, consisting especially of congealed fat and personal hygiene products that have been flushed down toilets.”
After an autopsy of the largest fatberg to date – the fatberg of Whitechapel Road – some of the main ingredients found were wet wipes, cooking oil, gym supplements, cocaine…the list goes on. One thing that can be observed is that what is found in the sewers is a reflection on our behaviour and throw-away culture.
I became fascinated with this piece of 21st century archeology and began experimenting with how it might look in the form of typography by making my own fat typeface.
I also started to think about how the fatberg could be recycled in some way. I liked that the process of forming a fatberg is essentially the same as making soap and thought it would be a funny juxtaposition to create a range of beauty products from the fatberg. Using the leftover typeface fat, I moulded together trash from around my house and made a candle.
